Creatine monohydrate is the most studied form and there is no convincing need to pay more for alternative versions. A simple maintenance dose is 3 to 5 grams every day. Timing is far less important than consistency. An optional loading phase of about 20 grams per day, divided into four servings for five to seven days, saturates the muscles faster; starting with 3 to 5 grams simply reaches the same point more gradually.
The most common visible change is a small increase in body weight from water stored in muscle. People with kidney disease, pregnant people and anyone taking medicines that affect kidney function should discuss creatine with a clinician before use.
